Teaching and Learning

"...Of all the things that are important to having good schools, nothing is as important as the teacher and what that person knows, believes, and can do.  That is where the rubber meets the road in our business."
 - The Skillful Teacher, 6th Edition
Saphier, Speca, & Gower (2008)

To be a skilled educator is to be a lifelong learner.  Ohio’s Learning Standards guide what students should know and be able to do – but that is just the beginning.  Delivering impactful teaching requires educators to
  • use a variety of assessments to design and evaluate their instruction,
  • utilize rigorous curricula to guide their instruction,
  • employ teaching methods which engage and motivate all learners,
  • differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs, and
  • maintain a safe and motivating school environment.

This complex mix of professional skills occurs in a constantly changing environment as new policies, research findings, technology, and student needs are identified.  Ongoing professional development is essential for educators to meet these many demands and continue to offer the very best opportunities for 21st century learning.

State Support Team – Region 8 partners with the districts of Medina, Portage, and Summit counties to provide free high-quality professional development, coaching, and technical assistance on a variety of evidence-based instructional practices that meet the academic and behavioral needs of all students.  We strive to incorporate the latest research from the field’s top scholars, to keep educators on the cutting edge of practice.  And we do our best to customize our supports to regional, district, and even building needs whenever possible, matching our offerings to local needs in much the same way that teachers match their instruction to the unique needs of their learners.  Click on the links below to learn more about some of our key topics in teaching and learning, and check back often for updates on events and resources!
